So here is a question I now pose to everyone, we've talked about what makes good science fiction, we've talked about science and power and almost everything related to that. However, I am wondering whether or not you guys have any recommendations to me as far as science fiction goes. In terms of books or movie or tv shows it doesn't matter.
To actually post a question, however, I was wondering whether or not you all read into the scripts of shows or movies or in between the lines of text in order to find out a hidden meaning. If you don't normally do this...do you not enjoy doing it or have you not found anything that is intriguing enough?
I know for myself that I don't personally like reading into a story...but if its something that has an in depth plot line that I need to consider certain characteristics to understand the story then I will do so. Let me know your thoughts/if you have any questions

I typically read a novel or watch a movie for pleasure without “reading ahead” or trying to discover what will occur at the end. If I find the story interesting I re-read the novel or re-watch the movie looking for “hidden signs or messages” so that I may better appreciate the particular work of art.
ReplyDeleteScience fiction stories are, like any other fiction stories, either plot-driven or character-driven. However, some can also be technology-driven. Whatever the case, I find that I enjoy that brand of sci-fi which raises intelligent/unique questions, philosophically or otherwise. That is, sci-fi is sorta used like a cover for your own propaganda.
ReplyDeleteIn these kinds of sci-fi, what is left unsaid is often more important than what is explicitly stated. These kinds of stories force you to think in unorthodox ways, which is something I've realized is not so easy to do. It forces you to question your own assumptions, beliefs and practices.
Needless to say, there aren't that many out there that are life-altering or thought-provoking, but the satisfaction I get if I happen to chance upon one is beyond the cheap thrills of other stories.
You know how they say that good science fiction is based on good science? It's true. You are less likely to find crazy battlemechs in stellar sci-fi, mainly because the creators have thought it out.
Good scientific movies and novels always hide something behind the stories, although it doesn't require you to think deep into the meaning behind it to enjoy the stories. I mean stories can be told in very interesting ways, but as long as it doesn't hide some meaning behind it, I will forget the stories soon after I read it. Also, I find culture backgroud is very important when I am trying to understand the stories or dig something from it because different cultures tend to tell stories in different ways using different elements which usually are more attracting to a particular culture.
ReplyDeleteI used to just watch movies and read books for pleasure but ever since ap English Junior year of high school where my brain was basically hardwired to read between the lines I find myself doing it even when I don't want to. Sometimes I find it intresting sometimes I don't. It just depends on what I'm feeling at the moment.
